Model year 1968 ushered in the second generation of the Chevrolet Chevelle, which lasted until 1972. The A-body was completely resculpted on a 3-inch shorter wheelbase with tapered front fenders, a rounded beltline and shorter, “kicked up” rear quarters. By 1969, the Chevelle was billed as “America’s most popular midsized car,” but 1970 saw the body get a slight redesign with more of a coke-bottle styling and interior updates. The Chevelle was available in a sport coupe, sport sedan, four-door sedan, wagon, El Camino or convertible configuration, with engine choices ranging from a 6-cylinder up to the newly introduced 454 CI V-8. Model year 1970 was also the final for quad headlights, which is often preferred over the Power-Beam single-unit models.
This 1970 Chevelle Super Sport Convertible ticks all the right boxes. Receiving a complete frame-off restoration, it sports a date-coded LS5 454/360 HP V-8 in the tidy engine bay. A Muncie M22 4-speed manual transmission is connected to a 12-bolt rear end. A build sheet is included. The body is bathed in Fathom Blue with white SS stripes on the factory cowl-induction hood with hood pins. All factory trim is in place, including the SS grille and SS454 badging on the front fenders. Original-style 5-spoke mag wheels sporting black cutouts and wrapped in BF Goodrich Radial T/A tires adorn all four corners, and the white vinyl top looks to be in very good condition.
The interior features black vinyl seats and door panels, with chrome accents and black loop carpet. A console with a Hurst 4-speed shifter splits the factory bucket seats with headrests. The dash pad and steering wheel are devoid of cracks or fading, and the gauge lenses appear to be clear, as does the radio lens. There is nothing quite like riding down the road in a convertible muscle car, where miles are measured in smiles instead of gallons. This 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle LS5 Convertible is sure to make a gorgeous addition to someone’s garage and provide plenty of miles of smiles.
